Meet Xena ...

Xena sends the following message via her devoted human guardian, Sherry ...

Picture

Hi! my name is Xena “Princess Warrior”. I’m a very small horse (22 inches high) with somewhat of a big attitude.

I was born a dwarf to miniature parents in September, 2015. My owners rescued me so I could have a better quality of life.

They love and take care of me even with my special disabilities. They intro-duced me to June, and she has been absolutely awesome. She is very caring and patient with me while working to correct the deformation of my hoofs.

Here I am with my best buddy.

Note from June:

On the right is a before-and-after picture of Xena's forelegs. We're going to try to help her hind legs next. Xena's owners don't know if she was born with her legs like this or if it is the result of neglect before they rescued her. Could be a combination of both. Dwarf minis often have skeletal abnormalities that are very difficult, if not impossible, to correct, but so far Xena is doing well with her corrected fores, and we're hoping we might be able to help the hinds also.

Some miniature horses carry genes for dwarfism while still appearing normal themselves. Before miniature horses are bred, they should be tested, and a horse carrying the genes for dwarfism should only be bred to a horse not carrying this mutation, or preferably not bred at all, as owners of future generations may not bother to test.

This pretty mare is another member of Kat's Texas Paso herd.

Picture

This is our girl Lola Palooza.  She is the daughter of our mare, Fiddleleaf's Picaboo.  Lola is a 2014 and 2016 Bella Forma National Champion, and 2014 Reserve Grand National Champion in Bella Forma.  We call Lola our pocket pony because she's always following us around.  Several times she climbed up on our deck to follow us into the house!  She definitely has a special personality.  She always amazes us.

Meet My Sweet Boy Mykonos....

He was a foal of our mare, Calista de Vitral (Cali).  Cali is a Vitral daughter....We showed Mykos in his third year as a Pleasure Gelding.  He ended up winning "High Point" for his class and taking National Champion!!  The picture shows him and his trainer....Mykonos is as sweet as a puppy, and I love to spoil him and love on him.  He is very smart and lazy!    I always have a blast riding him because I trust him and know him, and he trusts me as well...Mykonos has a very smooth gait which is great on the trails.  Hope to do a lot more trail riding with him soon.

This cute guy is Rocky, a 15-year old miniature stallion, who is very smart and curious. He found the phone in my pocket and suggested I should take his photo so he could become the next Internet sensation.

He's ready for his close-up.

When he wants to be, Rocky is very cooperative, as you can see.

He has some cool tricks up his sleeve, including the Elvis and the Hi Ho Silver.

Meet Dorothy ....

Here is Dorothy making a celebrity appearance at my daughter's wedding this summer, after arriving in style in the back of her owner Bill's SUV. Dorothy is a dwarf miniature horse. Although dwarf minis often have skeletal abnormalities and health problems, Dorothy has pretty nice confirmation. Her good nature and calm temperament made her a big hit at the wedding. She took all the attention in her stride, graciously mingling with the guests and grazing the lawn.

Here are Sherry's horses, Daisy and Sweetheart, peeking over the fence at Mom in her new car.

Picture

I'm Daisy on the left thinking, "Who's that, Sweetheart?"

Sweetheart to Daisy: " Hey you! ... Mom, is that you in that new car"?

Daisy:  " I'm raised from a baby, and green broke due to Mom having back problems and not able to continue my lessons. But I don't mind  hanging around with my rescue sister Sweetheart, who is fully trained in Western Pleasure 'n Trail. We just love when Ms June comes home to PA to give us our manicure!"

Meet Big Buddy ...

Karen kindly let her horse borrow her computer so that he could email us this message ...

Greetings, my name is Big Buddy. I am a Tennessee Walker Morgan mix. I come from the Amish country and I am 13 years old. My mom of the last 5 years has realized how big of a fraidy cat I am. Mrs June is my favorite because she asks me for my feet.  I can be stubborn and not very polite if someone tries to pick up my feet that I don't know.  I usually take the most time because I am a big love bug with sometimes bad manners. I get silly and drool when mom scratches my belly button.

Meet Finn .....

Janette tells us about her trusty steed, Finn - a 15-year-old Rocky Mountain Horse, who lives on a dairy farm with an entourage of horses, dogs, and goats.

Picture
.
June has worked wonders for my sweet fellow Finn! When he came to live with me several years ago, he was a chronic founder/IR with dreadfully flat, thin-soled hooves. He had been barehoof for most of his 11 years with a "pasture trim". Finn was pasture sound, but that was about it. I went through several types of boots, soaked his hay to leach out the sugars, kept him on a drylot, exercised him daily, but until I found June, nothing changed. He remained sore on any terrain except soft pasture. When June started trimming him, she was very patient with his hooves- here a little and there a little. Over time, we noticed some big changes happening with Finn. It has taken a while, many many months, but today he has beautiful compact upright hooves that dance away on any surface they touch, hard and rocky, FREE FROM BOOTS!!! He is sound now after each trim, he is out on pasture 24/7 with a muzzle, enjoying life as a horse should. Finn and I are so thankful for June.

Note from June:  Finn is a poster child for hoof improvement. Not all horses respond so well so quickly. The reasons for Finn's success are probably:  1) regular trimming (every 6-8 weeks); 2) a feeding regime customized for an IR (insulin-resistant) horse; 3) turnout on rocky ground; 4) exercise; 5) possibly some genetic factors; and 6) who knows!

Meet Maria ....

5/20/2016

Maria is wise old Quarter Horse mare whose owner, Bonnie, sadly passed away a year and a half ago. Although in recent years Bonnie and Maria enjoyed a more sedate lifestyle, Bonnie was an avid lifelong horsewoman and a champion barrel racer and pole bender. Bonnie's husband is not a horseman himself,  but he continues to take devoted care of Maria. Maria's other best buddy is a deer who lives in a pen next door to her pasture. The two of them spend a lot of time together, no doubt having deep interspecies conversations through the fence.
